What do you get when you cross millions of dark red cherries... with 10s of thousands of metal cans... a speeding conveyor belt and an overwhelmed woman in her forties?
Something that resembles a crime scene, that's what!
Sheesh! I am absolutely fried, canned... or maybe even cooked. I'm stained red from head to toe after tonight's shift.
Sometimes my summer job at the cannery is like riding the "Scrambler" at the State Fair... only it never stops... and there's simply not enough time to yell for help. And yes, it is at times a little like the episode of I Love Lucy where Lucy and Ethel are overwhelmed at the chocolate factory... only if I ate anything... I would be so fired. There's no hiding the fact that I was overwhelmed tonight.
So... this is real life. And if you open a can of cherries, blueberries, raspberries, boysenberries or marionberries in the next year or so I want you to think of me... and all of the rest of my coworkers who work so very hard in a hot humid cannery to provide our absolute best for you.
Dear God, I pray that tomorrow night will be a little easier.
