God In A Dixie Chicks Song

If you saw my playlist you might be surprised. My taste in music is varied. Everything from; Don Ho to Lyle Lovett, selections from Glee, JT,  Cold Play, Aretha, Dave Matthews, Beyonce and the Bee Gees to name a few. I'm not sure how 50 Cent and the song Lean Like A Cholo got on my list but every once in a while I like it.

Honestly, I don't listen to music all that much but certain songs and artists really turn my crank. Gifted musicians and songwriters have my utmost respect. When I do listen to music, I listen well… like over and over again.

Years ago, while watching an Episode of Medium on T.V. I heard the song Lullaby by the Dixie Chicks. Something about it resonated with me. I hadn't heard it until then and I knew I wanted to hear it again. I bought it on iTunes and it's been part of my playlist since. I did a little research and found out that episode of Medium was called "Twice Upon A Time" and aired on May 22, 2006.

Fast forward to present day 2014: On my way to lead a weekend retreat for women I felt inspired to listen to Lullaby. Hands free, of course, I hit play. The first two times through were just as before. I admired the instrumentation and vocal performances. I let my thoughts and prayers wander to the upcoming retreat and asked God to teach me what He needed me to know. The third time through the piece I heard the chorus differently. The lyrics jumped out at me like never before.

The chorus of any song usually repeats several times throughout the piece. By the last time through... I was moved to tears. I have no idea who Lullaby was written for or what the authors intended outcomes would be. In that moment, as far as I was concerned, the chorus of Lullaby was written for me. This might be a stretch for some… but I took the lyrics personally and wondered, God, is that you? Are you talking to me… through a Dixie Chicks song? Knowing God can use anything for Good, I listened even more closely.

It was as though God was asking me how long I wanted to be loved by Him and telling me at the same time He will never give up on me and will love me forever. Thank you, God. Thank you Lullaby songwriters. You might not have known… God would one day use your song to bless my heart and I needed that.

I want a love like that… forever love… that never gives up.

I pray, Dear God, teach me to love like you.
